about

I knew track 5 would be starkly different to any of the other tracks on the EP, and that's because I wanted to show a different side to the Autumn season. Although the traditional images of Autumn are very nostalgic (fallen leaves, large fields slowly turning red and brown and the ever-present whistle of the wind through the bare branches of the threes overhead), I spent my childhood in the city instead, where Autumn is as much represented by the dingy glow of orange streetlamps, a smattering of rain on the window of a chugging train, and the strange excitement of walking home at night on your own, waist-high in sodden leaves.

'Glass Smoke', as suggested by its title is supposed to represent the more urban kind of Autumn, a darker kind. This is also seen in the use of drums throughout almost all of the track, a departure from the rest of the EP, and also in the way the fast, driving mid-point provides a counter-balance to the driving melody of 'Run With It', for which this track can be seen to be a slightly warped mirror image.

Although probably not my favourite track on the EP, it's the one I'm most proud of.
